About The Tutor

Valerie has been teaching fine art to children in South and West Wales for over 20 years. A practising professional artist as well as an art teacher, Valerie graduated from UCW Aberystwyth with a Bachelors degree in Visual Arts in 1983.

Having three children of her own there was a ready demand for her teaching talents on her own doorstep!

On her arrival in the mid 1980’s to the beautiful location of ‘The Woodlands’ Aberystwyth her classes expanded to include the children of neighbours and local inhabitants. An art studio was built in the grounds to teach the new classes. Valerie took some time out to complete a higher diploma degree in Multi Disciplinary Computer Applications at Carmarthen College of Art which added to her range of art skills by incorporating computer based graphic design this she went on to teach to students in Pembrokeshire.

Since the late 1980’s she has been teaching art to children at The Woodlands and in Newcastle Emlyn. In 2002 The Little Art School under Valerie’s guidance established an ‘outreach’ programme, bringing art to young children from Tonypandy and Caerphilly to Carmarthen and Stackpole in West Wales working in partnership with local authorities and other arts professionals. In parallel to this she has had a number of shows in Ireland, London and Aberystwyth and has undertaken numerous professional illustration projects including the recent Games of Life Production and Family Play Project entitled ‘Family Holiday Games’ by Shando Varda.

She is of course fully certified with the enhanced C.R.B.Check, and fully insured with a public liability policy for the teaching of art in her own studios in Pembrokeshire and at Aberystwyth, Ceredigion and Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire.

The most important aspect of the Little Art School is Valerie’s enthusiasm for bringing out the fresh, original and very personal creativity of all her young artists together with her desire to encourage a life-long excitement, enjoyment and interest in the visual arts.
